Mid Range Masai Mara Safari Package Options & Rates

Lodge location directly impacts total package costs. Staying inside the reserve eliminates gate wait times and offers early morning game drives right from your front door, but carries higher lodge rates. Staying outside the reserve (near main gates) saves significantly on nightly room rates while keeping you within a 5-to-10-minute drive of Sekenani or Talek Gate.

Rates below are for two adults traveling together in a private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser, across low and peak seasons.

Payment Schedule & Voucher Verification

We require a 20% deposit to confirm your package. Upon receiving your deposit, we book and fully pay for your chosen lodges.

We then send you official hotel vouchers issued directly under your name. You can call or email the lodges directly using your voucher reservation code to verify that your room is fully confirmed and paid for before making further payments. Once verified, you pay a further 30%, bringing you to 50%. You pay the remaining 50% balance in crisp USD cash or credit card at pickup on Day 1, or via bank transfer seven days before departure. We also take Visa and Mastercard through Stripe, PayPal, Wise, Skrill, and Payoneer.

Cash refunds are not issued for traveler cancellations because deposit funds are remitted immediately to lock in non-refundable lodge rooms and driver schedules. You retain 100% of your deposit value to postpone and reschedule your safari to any future date. Cancelling inside 90 days can cost part of that value depending on the lodge, and inside two weeks the lodges apply strict retention terms. The Park Fee Seasonal Split Explained

A breakdown of Masai Mara park fees, room rates, and crowd levels by season to optimize your budget.

Travelers comparing package rates are often surprised by the price leap between low and peak seasons.

Narok County entry fees for non-resident adults sit at $100 per 24 hours from January to June, but jump to $200 per 24 hours from July to December. On a typical 4-day / 3-night safari, you need three 24-hour park passes. That ticket adjustment alone adds $300 per person to your total bill before lodge seasonal surcharges enter the calculation.

To review broader seasonal cost structures, read our guide on how much a Masai Mara safari costs.

Seasonal Cost Split & Budget Optimization Matrix

Timing your trip strategically can significantly lower your mid-range safari cost. The breakdown below details the price differences across high, shoulder, and low seasons, highlighting where you save the most money.

Minivan vs. 4×4 Land Cruiser Choice and Fly-In Options

Infographic comparing a 4x4 Land Cruiser and minivan across five performance and cost features.
Detailed matrix comparing off-road ability, mud performance, roof opening, comfort, and cost savings for safari vehicles.

While our packages default to custom 4×4 Land Cruisers, choosing a 7-seat safari minivan drops total package costs by $150 to $250 per group.

Honestly, skip the cheaper minivan. Paying the extra rate for a 4×4 Land Cruiser is not a luxury. It is the difference between navigating a slick clay slope in the Mara Triangle and getting stuck for three hours while lion cubs watch you from the bushes. Our comparison of private vs shared safari vehicles sets out the rest of the trade-off.

If you want to skip the 5.5-hour bumpy road drive from Nairobi altogether, we offer Fly-In Mid-Range Packages. Daily flights operate from Wilson Airport (WIL) via Safarilink directly to Olkiombo or Keekorok airstrips in 45 minutes. Flying typically adds $350 to $450 per person for return flight tickets and airstrip transfers, and our fly-in vs drive-in guide works through whether it is worth it on a mid-range budget.

Safari Vehicle Performance Comparison (Minivan vs. 4×4 Land Cruiser)

Selecting your transport is one of the most critical decisions when booking a mid-range package. This comparison evaluates how a custom 4×4 Land Cruiser compares to a standard 7-seat safari minivan across key safari conditions.

Realities of Mid-Range Tented Camps

You’ll wake up at 5:00 AM to the smell of woodsmoke, damp canvas, and the low, muffled grunts of hippos down in the Talek River.

The road journey from Nairobi has its friction points: thick red dust caking your teeth after leaving the tarmac, a bone-rattling corrugated dirt stretch past Suswa town, and dodgy public restrooms along the highway. Bring a fleece and a beanie for the morning drives. Guests who pack for the equator and not for 6:00 AM at altitude spend the first hour of every drive with their arms folded.

Mid-range camps like Zebra Plains or Sentrim Mara provide permanent stone foundations, flush toilets, hot rain showers, and evening campfires where you can drink a cold Stoney Tangawizi ginger beer. Wi-Fi at bush camps can be patchy. It might take twenty minutes just to load a simple email, but you come here for wildlife, not screen time.

Don’t drop $450 on a hot air balloon flight if you are traveling on a tight mid-range budget; put that money toward an extra night in a private conservancy instead. Our breakdown on Masai Mara reserve vs private conservancies explains how conservancy access grants night drives and walking safaris. To explore specific properties, read our list of mid-range lodges in the Masai Mara.

Practical Advice for North American Guests

  • JFK Flight & Buffer Night: Travelers landing on Kenya Airways’ non-stop flight from JFK reach Nairobi in the evening. Book a 1-night stay at Eka Hotel to rest before taking the 5.5-hour road transfer.
  • Entry Visas: Submit your mandatory entry permit online through the official Kenya eTA portal at least 72 hours before flying.
  • USD Cash Rules: Local exchange counters and drivers reject US dollar bills printed before 2013 or those with minor tears or ink stamps.
  • Electrical Plugs: Kenya uses UK Type-G 240V three-pin wall sockets. Pack a Type-G adapter to recharge dual-voltage camera batteries at camp generator stations.

Mid-range camps put you close to good leopard ground. James Sindiyo, who has spent over ten years tracking predators here, rates the fever tree thickets along the Talek River between 6:30 AM and 8:15 AM as the best odds you will get on a short stay.
